Can dogs eat carrots?

Safe

Yes — carrots are safe, low-calorie, and most dogs love them. Raw or cooked both work, in small pieces to avoid choking.

Carrots are one of the easiest healthy treats you can share with your dog. They're low in calories, high in fibre and beta-carotene, and the crunch of a raw carrot helps clean teeth.

Benefits

  • Low in calories — perfect for weight-managed dogs or training treats
  • High in beta-carotene (vitamin A) for eye and skin health
  • Good fibre content aids digestion
  • Raw carrots help scrape plaque — a natural dental bonus
  • Frozen carrot sticks soothe teething puppies

How much to give

Small dog (under 10kg)
1–2 tablespoons chopped, 2–3 times a week
Medium dog (10–25kg)
¼ of a medium carrot, daily is fine
Large dog (25kg+)
Up to half a carrot per day

How to prepare

  • Wash well and peel if not organic (pesticide residue sits on the skin).
  • Cut into sticks or coins — dogs love the crunch but can choke on whole carrots.
  • Raw is fine for most dogs; steamed or boiled plain is easier for seniors or dogs with dental issues.
  • Skip seasoning — no salt, butter, or oil.

Watch out for

  • Whole carrots can be a choking hazard for small dogs or gulpers.
  • Excessive amounts cause loose stools (high fibre + beta-carotene).
  • Diabetic or weight-managed dogs: count the natural sugars. A medium carrot has ~4g of sugar.

Frequently asked

How many carrots can my dog eat a day?

A medium dog can have ¼ to ½ a carrot a day without issue. Treat-sized portions should stay under 10% of daily calories, alongside normal meals.

Are baby carrots safe for dogs?

Yes — baby carrots are just smaller carrots, and the pre-washed convenience is a plus. Cut them to match your dog's size to avoid choking.

Can puppies eat carrots?

From about 8 weeks, once they're eating solid food. A frozen carrot stick is a great teething soother — always supervise, and remove if it gets small enough to swallow whole.

Are cooked carrots better than raw?

Both are safe. Raw is crunchier and better for teeth; cooked is easier to digest for seniors or puppies. Don't add salt, butter, or spices.

Can carrots cause an allergic reaction in dogs?

Very rare — carrot allergies exist but are uncommon. Introduce any new food slowly and watch for itching, loose stool, or swelling.
