Can dogs eat cheese?

Safe with care

Most dogs can have small amounts of plain cheese as a treat. Some are lactose intolerant, though, and some cheeses (blue, cream, very salty) are best avoided.

Cheese is a favorite high-value training treat because dogs adore it. But it's calorie-dense, can cause stomach upset in lactose-sensitive dogs, and needs to be used in small amounts.

Benefits

  • High-value training reward — brilliant for recall and tricky training moments
  • Source of protein, calcium, and B vitamins
  • Handy for disguising tablets
  • Most dogs find it irresistible, so a tiny piece goes a long way

How much to give

Small dog (under 10kg)
1 pea-sized piece, occasional
Medium dog (10–25kg)
A cube about 1cm, a few times a week max
Large dog (25kg+)
Up to a tablespoon grated, a few times a week

How to prepare

  • Pick low-lactose varieties like cheddar, Swiss, or mozzarella.
  • Go light on the salt — avoid processed cheese slices and feta.
  • Serve plain, no butter or seasoning.
  • Grated is easier to portion and lower risk of overfeeding.

Watch out for

  • Lactose intolerance in some dogs = vomiting, gas, diarrhea.
  • High fat can trigger pancreatitis — cut back sharply for sensitive breeds.
  • High sodium contributes to weight gain and can be dangerous for dogs with heart conditions.
  • Blue cheese (Stilton, Roquefort) contains roquefortine C — can cause tremors and seizures. Avoid entirely.
  • Cream cheese with flavourings (onion, garlic, chives) is toxic.

Frequently asked

What cheese is safest for dogs?

Low-lactose, low-salt options: cheddar, Swiss, and mozzarella in small amounts. Cottage cheese is often tolerated well and is lower in fat.

Can dogs eat cheddar cheese?

Yes, in small pieces. Cheddar is lower in lactose than many cheeses, but still calorie-dense — treat as a high-value reward, not a daily snack.

Is cheese safe for lactose-intolerant dogs?

No — those dogs should avoid cheese (and all dairy). Signs of lactose intolerance: gas, diarrhea, vomiting within a few hours of eating.

Can puppies eat cheese?

A tiny amount from 12 weeks is usually fine, but puppies often have more sensitive digestion. Start with a pea-sized piece and watch for upset.

Is mozzarella safe for dogs?

Yes — mozzarella is lower in fat and salt than many cheeses. A small piece as a treat is fine for most dogs.
