Can dogs eat eggs?

Safe

Yes — cooked eggs are one of the best natural protein boosts for dogs. Raw eggs carry a small salmonella risk and are best avoided unless your vet says otherwise.

Eggs are nutritionally complete — protein, healthy fats, and nearly every vitamin and mineral dogs need. Cooked plain, they're a fantastic addition to meals or a high-value training reward.

Benefits

  • Complete protein with all essential amino acids
  • Source of vitamins A, D, B12, and riboflavin
  • Omega-3 fats support skin and coat health
  • Easy to digest when cooked
  • Helpful for dogs recovering from illness or needing weight gain

How much to give

Small dog (under 10kg)
A quarter to half an egg a few times a week
Medium dog (10–25kg)
One egg a few times a week
Large dog (25kg+)
One to two eggs a few times a week

How to prepare

  • Cook plain — boiled, scrambled, or poached.
  • No oil, butter, salt, cheese, or seasoning.
  • Let it cool before serving.
  • Shells can be ground and sprinkled for a calcium boost, but most commercial diets are already calcium-balanced.

Watch out for

  • Raw eggs: small salmonella risk (to dog and family).
  • Raw egg whites contain avidin, which blocks biotin absorption when fed long-term.
  • Allergies exist — rare but possible. Start with a tiny amount.
  • Cholesterol: healthy dogs handle egg yolks fine, but dogs with pancreatitis or high lipids should check with their vet.

Frequently asked

Can dogs eat raw eggs?

It's not recommended. The salmonella risk is small but real, and long-term raw egg whites can cause biotin deficiency. Cooked plain is far safer and just as nutritious.

How should I cook eggs for my dog?

Scrambled (no butter, oil, or milk), boiled, or poached. Plain, cooled, no seasoning.

How many eggs can my dog eat?

A medium dog can have one cooked egg a few times a week as a meal topper or treat. Too many eggs can be calorically dense and throw off balanced nutrition.

Can puppies eat eggs?

Yes, from about 8 weeks. Start with a small amount of cooked egg and watch for stomach upset.

Is eggshell safe for dogs?

Ground eggshell provides calcium, but your dog almost certainly gets enough from their regular diet. Talk to your vet before adding any calcium supplement.
